Is ESG a legal requirement in the UK?

ESG isn’t (yet) a legal requirement for all businesses in the UK, but it’s becoming increasingly important. Large companies with more than 500 employees and those listed on the London Stock Exchange face some mandatory reporting, especially

on environmental impacts. There is plenty of speculation about regulations coming in for smaller organisations as well so it’s important to keep up to date with government guidance.

For SMEs, while ESG reporting isn’t legally required, embracing its principles can boost your reputation, attract investment, talent and ensure long-term success. Many UK businesses are voluntarily adopting ESG practices to stay ahead of regulations and meet customer expectations. In our experience, businesses which proactively tackle ESG as a priority can significantly improve their talent attraction and retention, and can also become more profitable in the longer term.
