Managing a multi-generational workforce
Today’s workplace faces an unprecedented generational situation which presents both opportunities and challenges for every business, small or large. With a span of up to five generations in work today, and a sixth rapidly approaching with generation “alpha,” employers must tread a careful line to meet the expectations and demands of them all.
The benefit of diversity
Much has been written about the different ‘attitudes’ associated with different generations. But it’s important to work with facts, not assumptions – age is not necessarily an indicator of experience, attitude or aptitude, and by embracing the different viewpoints, skills and opportunities of different age groups, SMEs have a unique opportunity to diversity their workforces and create competitive advantage, while building stronger pipelines of talent for succession.
Generational differences
A recent McKinsey report dispelled some of the myths around generational differences – there are more similarities than people often think. That said, key differences may include attitudes to money, flexibility, family and caregiving responsibilities, work-life balance, learning and development, wellbeing support and mental health protection.
Harnessing difference to create high performing teams
To create truly integrated, multigenerational teams, it’s important to give your people the opportunity to be properly heard. You might use engagement surveys, 1-1s, employee forums and focus groups, or a combination. In terms of recruitment, it’s vital to consider the different situations, expectations and potential limitations of different age groups and demographics. Creating a fair and equitable place of work starts with an inclusive recruitment, onboarding and development programme, without bias towards or against any particular group. You may also want to think about the tone of your job ads, where you place them, and the mechanics of your recruitment process to enable people of all generations equal opportunity to identify, access and succeed in application opportunities.
While multigenerational workforces are not without their challenges, they also present an unprecedented span of experience, perspective and opportunity. This is a big subject and one we have covered in depth in webinars and workshops with clients.
